Examining the evolution of student housing needs while highlighting trends and opportunities in this growing asset class, Bisnow’s San Diego Student Housing Summit, held February 12th at the University of San Diego, drew nearly 400 attendees.

The half day event – focused on the planning, development, construction and design of higher education facilities and university housing units – featured two panel discussions with top owners, developers, administrators and decision makers in San Diego’s rapidly growing student housing market.

Crosbie Gliner Schiffman Southard & Swanson LLP (CGS3) partner Joseph von Meier, who represents multi-family and student housing clients across the country, kicked off the event – moderating the event’s first panel discussion, “Developing and Designing The Next Generation Of Student Housing: Re-Imagining Student Living Through Development, Construction, Design and Focusing on The Student Experience.”  Von Meier hosted a panel of high profile commercial real estate and student housing experts including Hemlata Jhaveri, senior associate vice chancellor, residential, retail, supply chain services, UC San Diego; Alex Leonard, senior director, development, Greystar; Eric Naslund, principal, Studio E; Guy Carpino, engineering principal, Michael Baker International; Jason Dunster, director design integration, McCarthy Building Companies and Chris Sullivan, project director, Sundt.  Von Meier touched on multiple issues, in particular the construction of cost-effective solutions for student populations, while not sacrificing quality, design and safety.

The second panel, moderated by David McCullough, principal of McCullough Landscape Architecture, focused on “Accommodating the Growing Student Body Throughout San Diego: Supply and Demand Dynamics, Increasing Units and Ensuring Space for All Students in the San Diego Region.”  Speakers included David Senden, principal, KTGY; Bob Schulz, university architect and associate vice president of real estate, SDSU; Abbie Hawkins, vice president, development, The Michaels Organization; Rudy Medina, founder and development director, Next Space Development and Richard King, principal, Gensler.

Specializing in the residential development process, von Meier concentrates on high-profile, complex real estate transactions with a focus on student housing, multifamily, luxury residential and retail development and construction.
